Do you have a job title?
Freelance writer. It does have a certain ring to it, doesn’t it? There are a few drawbacks to putting it on your business cards, though. It’s a very general job title: a writer could be working on articles, SEO optimization, writing marketing copy, or a whole list of other things.
I spent a few minutes trying to think up more specific job titles and came up with this list. Feel free to add to it in the comments:
- Copy writer
- Journalist
- Blogger
- Corporate Communications Specialist
- Publications Specialist
- Editor
- Proofreader
- Writing Consultant
- Writing Coach
- Stringer
- Newsletter writer
- Staff Writer
- Technical Writer
- Playwright
- Novelist
Personally, I’ve used different job titles when talking to different people. If I’m trying to land a client who needs press releases written, I’ll focus on that. If I’m trying to query for a magazine, I’ll describe myself as a journalist.
What does your business card say?

I envy your title.
But it just goes to show how many new job titles the internet has created.

Back when I was an accountant, it said, “Bean Counter Extraordinaire”!
Now I’m dull and boring with “Freelance Writer”. People here don’t get my sense of humour, so I have to keep it simple.
