A Day in the Life of a Freelance Writer
I’m the first to admit that I can have a problem staying on track when I’m working alone. I’ve found that have a regular routine can help me, though, and I try to stick to my schedule as much as possible. I’m sharing that schedule below, and I’d love to hear what tweaks you’ve made to your own schedule.
6:30-ish AM Wake up. I sort through my email and the day’s news and add any relevant items to my task list.
7:00-ish AM Shower, breakfast, etc. I describe these times as “ish” because I move about as fast as a sloth after I wake up. It takes me a little while to get going.
8:30 AM Blogging and regular writing commitments. I try to get all of the writing that I do on a regular basis done in the morning, allowing me to use the afternoon for new projects.
12:00 PM Lunch. I check email again while I’m eating.
12:30 PM Writing and projects. In addition to articles and other writing I might do in the afternoon, I also handle some personal projects (like any work that needs to be done on this blog), as well as design projects that I’ve taken on.
5:00 PM Dinner. This time varies by when my boyfriend gets home and how much effort is needed to make dinner. Also, I have classes one evening a week that mess up my schedule.
7:00 PM Projects. If we aren’t doing anything, I often catch up on other projects after dinner — especially if I’m running behind on my writing.
10:00 PM Bedtime.
I don’t mean to give you the impression that I spend 11 hours a day working, of course. I take plenty of small breaks scattered through out the day, for everything from housework to chatting with friends. I try to take a fairly relaxed approach to working. But I do try to get plenty done.

I don’t work after dinner–in fact, I keep East Coast hrs and knock off around 3 PM.

I love posts like this where I get a peek in to what actually exactlyish happens in another writer’s day.
