Great idea! Here's my tip: Backup EVERYTHING! Have a spare battery, more than one memory card, a 2nd lens (if you can afford it -- heck pros have spare camera bodies, too). When you offload your pictures to your computer, make a CD or DVD copy of the data, too. I even use Flickr to upload my latest JPEGs. Can't be too safe nowadays.

This is a great idea and very generous of you. I guess I'll go ahead and contribute a quick tip:

When you come across a subject, take a couple photos on automatic mode from a standard angle. These may not be compelling but with the basic scene captured you're now free to experiment with camera position, shutter speed, etc. If your manual settings are incorrect or that creative composition just doesn't work, at least you'll have a couple okay shots. This is especially important for travel photography where you may not get a chance to go back and try again!
